Megaesophagus Dogs

A community for special dogs... and their families and caregivers

It has been nearly a year since Dakota's diagnosis and I hate to say it, but I am surprised he is still with us. He continues to be pretty stable with only a few bouts of AP over the Winter.

In January we decided to try chiropracty. We went once a week for about 8 weeks and Dakota's overall happiness and health certainly improved. He has more energy and is more active than he has been in months. We were hoping that the spinal manipulation would help dislodge something and his esophagus might get better, but it hasn't.

We are now seeing a holistic vet who has taken Dakota off nearly all of his meds and put him on supplements. We were so scared at first because we were sure that his drug cocktail was what was keeping him going. It turns out that he is now feeling better than ever.

He still gets thyroid and prilosec, but that's it. He gets Vitamins A, C and E daily, as well as 20 drops of probiotics and 2 Tbsp of Flax Seed oil. Did you know that each Tbsp of flax seed oil is 110 calories! He is starting to gain a little weight after being on the new schedule for a month. He is no longer using his nebulizer, which we were previously doing 2-3 times a day. It is really amazing!!

I can't say for sure if it's the placebo effect or what, but we are going to continue doing what we are doing.

Kolene and Dakota, that is fantastic news! :) Definitely keep us updated about his progress but sounds like things are very positive. :)
